South Africa Wedding Invitation

For an incredible destination wedding in South Africa, we commemorated this couple's New York meets Africa backgrounds with elegance and sophistication. We focused on textural details with beautiful tone on tone letterpress designs of New York, fused together with African wildlife and cartography. The final invitation design was produced on seven different papers sourced from around the world, wrapped in a leather strip holding an embossed leather luggage tag and delivered in grass-wood filled boxes.

Sketches

We started the process by brainstorming some different designs for Jennifer & John’s wedding invitation. The designs all took inspiration from the geography, animals and culture in South Africa. We also looked to materials such as leatherette papers, feathers, twine and even embossed crocodile materials to further enhance the suite.

Cover Designs

Part of our exploratory was taking a look at different folder cover designs. All of our designs were inspired by travel journals and sketchbooks to bring to life the global aspect of the wedding, with guests coming from all four corners of the world and meeting in South Africa.

Alternate cover designs

Monograms

We proposed a range of monograms and the couple invariably honed in on a crest design that incorporated elements of South Africa and New York City. The final monogram included a NYC skyline as well as a lion and zebra, an unexpected and unique combination.

We created a custom calligraphic map of the region with whimsical icons designating all the notable landmarks in the area.

Design Refinements

Once the look and feel were defined, we embarked on the process of extending the design to all the pieces in the invitation suite. From the reply cards and enclosure cards to envelopes, we designed each piece to match the invitation design.

Boxes

We brainstormed a few different options for the invitation mailer box and label with inspiration taken from African art and wildlife. The final labels would each be hand calligraphed and affixed to white boxes before being sent in the mail.

At the end of the creative process, after all edits and refinements are made, the full suite comes to life in the hands of our expert team of printers and craftsmen.
